Murano blown glass fish with hand-engraved 24-karat gold leaf

This fish was created using the ancient sgraffito technique on 24-karat pure gold leaf or white gold leaf.
Through a special preparation, the gold leaf is applied to Murano glass.
Using a very fine metal tip, the gold leaf is then engraved slowly and patiently until the desired decoration is achieved.
Finally, the glass is placed in a high-temperature kiln to firmly bond the gold to its surface.
The origins of this technique date back to the Roman era, more specifically to the Mosaic Period (3rd century AD).
